Update a mail password on iPhone

Modern email services like Gmail and Outlook (Hotmail) – including school, university and work accounts using Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 – use something called OAuth, in which you’re taken to the service’s website to log in.

Note: If these instructions don’t match your screen, you probably have an older version of iOS or iPadOS. See the separate section below.

1. Tap Settings.
2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Apps, then Mail.
3. Tap Mail Accounts.
4. Tap the appropriate account.
5. Tap Re-enter Password and follow the steps to log in with your new password.

Email providers like BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk and Virgin Media use traditional password authentication.

You’ll need to update your password in two places — one for sending and one for receiving, even though it’s almost always the same for both.

6. Under Outgoing Mail Server tap SMTP.
7. Under Primary Server tap the name of the server.
8. Type the new password in the space provided.
9. In the top-right corner, tap Done.
10. In the top-left corner, tap Back to return.
11. Under Incoming Mail Server, type the new password in the space provided.
12. In the top-right corner, tap Done.
